TPACK vs. SAMR

Teaching students come in different forms. Two models that are used to teach any child are TPACK and SAMR. These two models show a teacher how they should teach any group of children with any technology. TPACK stands for Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge. This technique is a combination of  technological knowledge (TK), content knowledge (CK), and pedagogical knowledge (PK). You need to use all three of these in order to teach any classroom successfully. Using your knowledge of the technology in the classroom you can show any child how the technology works as well as using your content knowledge to teach the topic. Using any technology to teach the content would help the student learn in more ways then just one. To add on to these you should also have some pedagogical knowledge which is the knowledge of how to teach so the students learn. By using all three of these you can be a successful teacher. TPACK differs from the SAMR model however. SAMR is a model that shows how you could use teach using substitution, augmentation, modification, and redefinition. Substitution is the level where a teacher is using new technology tools to teach the same content the same way. One example of substitution is using an interactive whiteboard like a regular whiteboard or chalkboard. Augmentation is almost the same of substitution but you can use some new functions of the technology. This can be used such as when you use the interactive whiteboard you can move the text around without erasing it. Modification is where the technology is used for a different way to teach the subject. This is done when, for example, you use an interactive white board to make a game instead of just writing the information. Finally, there is redefinition where you can create new tasks. TPACK and SAMR both have to do with using technology to teach a classroom. However, TPACK and SAMR have different means. TPACK shows what different knowledge you need to become a great teacher while SAMR shows four ways you can bring new or different technology into the classroom.
